Tight muscles and muscle spasms

A muscle spasm is classed as an involuntary contraction of the muscle which occurs suddenly and usually resolves after a short period of time but are often painful. When a muscle spasm occurs a bulge or tight contracted muscle may be seen or felt. This usually goes when the spasm subsides. Acute and chronic muscle contracture can be very painful.

Muscle tightness or stiffness is usually the term given when you’re finding it more difficult to move around than usual due to a muscular ache or pain. It is a common term used by patients and practitioners to describe muscle tension in the body, but does not have a specific scientific explanation. Muscle tightness often benefits from manual treatment.

Muscles tightness and muscle spasms can occur for several reasons including over training, poor posture, dehydration, change in equipment or other biomechanical conditions such as nerve irritation.

How Bridgeham can help?

At Bridgeham we recommend an initial appointment with one of our osteopaths or massage therapists as they will be able to assess and diagnose the cause of pain and provide the most appropriate treatment.

Techniques we use include traditional massage, different types of stretching, manual inhibition, dry needling acupuncture and ultrasound therapy.

Should the therapist determine that the muscle pain arose from a poor movement habit or technique you may be referred onto one of our Pilates instructors in order to encourage the correct movement patterns and prevent future injury.

We occasionally may recommend that you see our nutritionist should the issue continue to return e.g. on-going cramps.

Expectations

We find that most simple conditions can be treated within one or two appointments such as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) from training too hard, however more complicated issues like nerve compression causing muscle cramps may take a few sessions to resolve.

Testimonial

I started coming to Bridgeham in September 2016 after suffering pain in my calf from running. In October 2016 I found out that I got a place in the London Marathon this April! I had regular (monthly) massage sessions with Steve leading up to the run. Yesterday I completed the Marathon in 4 hours and 23 minutes, with absolutely no issues at all! I would really like to thank Steve (and Bridgeham) for getting me through the experience. I was running for St Catherine’s Hospice and have raised nearly £6,000! The team at Bridgeham were part of that journey. Thank you.     -Mr G
