Vitamin D

It’s vitamin D awareness week! So make the most of the last few rays of the summer sunshine and give yourself a top up!

Vitamin D is vital in maintaining calcium and phosphate levels in the body for healthy bones and teeth and plays a big role in bone growth and repair. It also helps to regulate cell growth and immune function as well as reduce inflammation.

Deficiency in vitamin D can result in thinner, brittle or deformed bones and can cause a condition called rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.

As it is only found in a small number of foods such as oily fish, fortified fat spreads and eggs, we get the majority of our vitamin D from the sun. Most people get a sufficient amount of the vitamin through a healthy diet and regular sunshine. However there are certain groups that may be susceptible to a vitamin D deficiency such as pregnant and breastfeeding women, those over 65 years of age, children under 5 years of age and those who do not get enough sunlight or cover up their skin when outside.

Vitamin D supplements are available in most supermarkets and health shops. Our nutritionist recommends Dlux a vitamin D oral spray which promotes better absorption and faster action than most tablet supplements, which is available to purchase in the clinic. Should you need more advice on vitamin D or other supplements why not come and see our nutritionist Zena?
